Favorite Cathedral Quartet Recording

  • 13 October 2010

This afternoon, I was listening to what is probably my favorite CD the Cathedral Quartet ever recorded: Faithful. I probably got it a year or two after it was released and, no matter how often I listen to it, I never get tired of it. It seems to have the perfect combination of fast songs and slow songs. I remember when “Healing” hit the radio, I could have cried when George Younce and Roger Bennett each sang their respective verses. It still touches me when I hear it.

So, what is your favorite recording of the Cathedrals?

I personally like “Something Special”, the song selection is fantastic, and every song could be a single!

My favorite Cathedral project is “Travelin’ Live” from 1986, I think. “Boundless Love”, “Blood Washed Band”, “Whosoever Will”, “He’s My Lord”, “I’m In The Shadow”, George’s “Who on ‘da bus” story. Great stuff!

To answer your question above, “Something Special” is from 1982, maybe 1981. It is the first project that Bill Gaither produced for the group and included their first #1 song, “Step Into The Water”.

I forgot about Travelin’ Live. That’s the first Cathedral’s recording I owned and I played it over and over. That’s probably #3 on my list of theirs. You know, I said Faithful was my favorite but it would be a toss-up between that one and Master Builder. I just listen to Faithful more since I have it on CD. My favorite era of theirs was with Danny Funderburk and Mark Trammell.

Master Builder is probably my second favorite Cathedral recording… but I’d actually say it is their best recording. Now that I think about it, when Wes Burke did his “Top 5 Projects of All Time” earlier this year, it was the only Cathedral project I included in my top five. That recording showcases what I think of as “The Cathedral Sound” better than any other project.
